As
I waited for the color to set in my hair the lady gave a stack of magazines to
thumb through. I usually pass up this opportunity to educate myself on the drama
fest of people and Ok magazine. With the few brain cells my pregnancies have
left me I try to stay away from the things that simply suck the logic out of
me. But I came across a Redbook Magazine in the stack which I had never read
before so thought I’d give it a try, after all I can’t sit there for 30 minutes
pretending to not listen to the lady next to me talking about her love
triangle, I think she caught on.. An article on the front called little girls
gone wild caught my eye and I immediately went through and started reading it. It
was amazing to see an article, in a fashion magazine at that with the same view
I have about little girls/divas now days. As many know I’m anti Disney princess
(and don’t get me started on Bratz and most barbies) . I think that Disney princesses
give off a wrong impression. They all are lost in some way. They all need to be
saved. They all find their knight in shining armor (or however he may be
dressed). And they all kiss in the end with that stupid look of love between
them and that nothing matters as long as you’re “the fairest of them all”. And
what I’m just beginning to realize is this:
You can’t really tell
how old the princesses are can you!?!? Or Barbie…
NO,
you can’t. The only one, I believe, who mentions her age is Ariel. Disobeying
her father at a ripe old age of 16. All of these Princesses look young and
girls can see themselves playing the part.
This article went on about a
little girls spa at Disney land where you can take your little princess and
they will paint her with makeup, shower her in glitter, put princess heels on
her and will put more bobby pins in her hair it gives me headache just thinking
about it, and don’t forget the ultimate spa experience of a mani/pedi combo. Now
it may sound innocent enough but when you really think about it what message is
this sending? Why can’t they just have tea, and maybe some story time with the princesses,
call me old fashioned but why must it be a drag queen showdown. Don’t get me
wrong I know that little girls have played dress up for as long as we can all remember
but I remember the day when we dressed up in our mothers dresses with gaudy
costume jewelry but these girls are trying to emulate another women who Disney has
made to look flawless and wanted by all men, beast and prince alike. In reality
though it’s our faults as mothers that we have 4 year olds who knows what fat is
and 5 year olds booty popping to “all the single ladies” on stage for dance recitals
(dance classes now days could make up a whole other blog bashing for me I HATE MOST OF THEM)
. Our girls have been taught to think that’s what makes
a real women.
There are many other things out
there that I feel over sexualizing our daughters at such a young age but I felt
the need to write about Disney this blog. I found a video that I feel points
out a lot of what’s wrong with Disney for not only girls but little boys as
well.
